Face Lift Overview

A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy (literally, surgical removal of wrinkles), removes excess skin and re-drapes the skin to create a more trim, smooth, and youthful appearance. Face lift procedures target the cheeks, jowls and neck, and can be combined with a forehead lift or eyelid surgery. There are three main contributors to wrinkled skin: loss of tissue volume beneath the skin, loss of elasticity of the skin, and persistent facial muscle movement. A face lift will address the loss of elasticity by removing portions of skin causing the remaining skin to stretch out over the contours of your face.

Aging is a gradual process, but we tend to notice its affects all at once. Usually wrinkles, lines and folds suddenly become apparent one morning as you look in the mirror. Significant weight fluctuation can also contribute to the loss of elasticity of the facial skin causing additional wrinkles and sagging. In our health conscious society, most people feel much younger and more vibrant than they look, and thousands have had a face lift to help them look as good as they feel, making face lift the fifth most popular pllastic surgery procedure in the United States.

Having Realistic Expectations for Face Lift Surgery

Having realistic expectations about how your looks will change and how those changes will affect your life is important. Disappointment may happen, especially if you believe surgery will fix your life problems, save your marriage or cure depression. Having a face lift will help you look more youthful. Looking younger, vibrant and well rested may boost your self-confidence, but that won’t change who you are or the way other people feel about you.

Questions to Ask Your Prospective Surgeon

Once you’ve made an appointment for a consultation, take the time to prepare a list of questions and concerns you want to address with your prospective surgeon. The consultation is your opportunity to assess the surgeon as much as it is their opportunity to determine your candidacy for the procedure. Take your time, be thorough and know that you are never required to commit to a procedure or a surgeon because you’ve had a consultation, even if the consultation is free.

There are many different types of face lifts, including mini-facelifts, mid-facelifts and threadlifts. There are also standard techniques and cutting edge procedures. Many surgeons have their own style and methods. You want to make sure that you choose a surgeon whose work you admire and who has experience with facial surgery. You will be able to see the outcome of some of their procedures by looking at before-and-after pictures.

This list of information may help you compile your questions and may encourage you to do some further research on the many different aspects of facelift surgery:

  • Ask about the incisions, where scars will form and if the scars will be visible.
  • You may want to discuss alternatives to a full face lift like threadlifts or mini-facelifts.
  • Let your surgeon know of any medications, herbal treatments or vitamins you take, and make sure to get a list of products to avoid before and after your procedure.
  • A face lift will not improve the tone, texture or diminish damage of the facial skin. If you also want to improve your facial skin, ask if your surgeon recommends any combination procedures like injectable fillers or laser skin resurfacing.

If you’re consulting with a surgeon from 1800mySurgeon, you can rest assured that you will be meeting with a qualified Board-Certified Surgeon. If you already have a surgeon in mind, we can also perform a background check before you schedule your consultation. Most importantly, always trust your instincts during the consultation. The success of your surgery will be based on how you feel about your surgeon, your surgery, your recovery and your result.

Face Lift Recovery

Bearing in mind that a face lift is generally considered major surgery, recovery is usually smooth. Pain and discomfort tend to be surprisingly minimal. Swelling can diminish within a few days. If bruises occur, they will fade in a week or two.

You will need to rest for the first few days after surgery with your head elevated. Ice will help reduce swelling and bruising. You will be given medication to help alleviate any discomfort you may experience. It is not uncommon to experience some loss of sensation for a brief period, and your skin may feel tight and pulled. All of this is part of the normal recovery process.

Be sure to follow your doctor’s orders for returning to or engaging in strenuous activities. Any undue pressure or stress on the incisions will increase the size of your scars. Scars will be pink for up to seven months, and then they will begin to flatten and turn white. Since most incisions are behind the hair line, they are not usually visible even as they heal.

Face Lift Risks

Any medical treatment carries certain risks and the possibility of complications.

During your consultation, you will want to ask your surgeon about the following risks:

  • Is there a risk of infection along the incision site?
  • What is the risk of fluid retention or additional swelling?

It is important to remember that no surgeon can guarantee your satisfaction with a face lift nor can they deny any risk factors. No matter how rarely risks occur, every medical treatment carries a certain amount of risk, and you have to decide for yourself if your potential desired result is worth the risk.

Long Term Results of Face Lift Surgery

Face lift surgery can help you look as much as ten years younger depending on the type of procedure. After a face lift your skin will continue to age, and if you have the procedure at a relatively young age, you may decide to have a second procedure in 10 to 15 years. Taking good care of you skin, eating healthy and exercising can help you to continue to look young.
