Neck Lift Overview

A neck lift is the right solution for fixing a sagging or fleshy neck. A person’s neck can age before their face. A drastic weight loss can also change the way a neck appears. A neck lift is the procedure that can help correct and enhance the neck, giving it a natural look. It will help get rid of the “turkey waddle” or the appearance of neck “bands.”

A neck lift is performed in 2-3 hours, depending on desires and personal circumstances. It is a good idea to be in good physical and mental health before undergoing neck lift surgery. Let the surgeon know what you dislike about your neck so you can get the results you want.

A neck lift consists of incisions beneath the chin and behind the ears. The surgeon will then have access to the neck muscle and manipulate it according to the circumstances. Sometimes, the surgeon will need to remove some muscle. In newer procedures, the surgeon may make smaller incisions and use a small camera to complete the neck lift surgery.

Having Realistic Expectations about Neck Lift

Being honest with yourself about how your body will change and how those changes will affect your life is important. Disappointment may happen, especially if you believe surgery will fix your life problems, save your marriage or cure depression. Having neck lift surgery will result in a tighter neck. A tighter neck may boost your self-confidence, but that won’t change who you are or the way other people feel about you.

Questions to Ask Your Prospective Surgeon

Once you’ve made an appointment for a consultation, take the time to prepare a list of questions and concerns you want to address with your prospective surgeon. The consultation is your opportunity to assess the surgeon as much as it is their opportunity to determine your candidacy for the procedure. Take your time, be thorough and know that you are never required to commit to a procedure or a surgeon because you’ve had a consultation, even if the consultation is free.

Neck lift differs from neck enhancements such as Botox, which will also give the neck a smoother and tighter appearance. Some surgeons will use different techniques to achieve a successful neck lift. You want to make sure that you choose a surgeon whose work you admire. You will be able to see the outcome of some of their surgeries by looking at before-and-after pictures. Have the surgeon thoroughly explain their procedure and why they value a certain technique more than others.

Make sure to speak to the anesthesiologist before you schedule a surgery, and inform them of any allergies or reactions you have to any medications. Make sure to tell both your surgeon and the anesthesiologist if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

This list of information may help you compile your questions and may encourage you to do some further research on the many different aspects of neck lift surgery:

  • Is a neck lift surgery right for me? Will Botox fix my problem?
  • Will the incision during the surgery leave scars under my neck and ears?
  • What is the recovery time?
  • Where are neck lift surgeries performed?
  • What are the costs involved in this surgery?
  • Does insurance cover a neck lift?

If you’re consulting with a surgeon from 1800mySurgeon, you can rest assured that you will be meeting with a qualified Board-Certified Surgeon. If you already have a surgeon in mind, our qualified patient coordinators can also perform a background check before you schedule your consultation. Most importantly, always trust your instincts during the consultation. The success of your surgical experience will be based on how you feel about your surgeon, the surgery, your recovery and your result.

Neck Lift Surgery Recovery

As with any surgery, you may be groggy from the anesthetic when you return home from the surgery. It is best to follow doctor’s orders for the first couple of weeks. Keeping your head elevated by sleeping on two pillows for approximately two weeks is highly recommended. Keep your head still along with your neck is crucial.

Swelling is normal around the lower face and neck for the first 3 days. Bruising is also typical, however, both the swelling and bruising will go away as you recover. Excessive pain and redness should be reported to the surgeon immediately.

As you feel better, you have to keep in mind that for at least the first 3 weeks, you should be careful not to lift heavy objects or raise your blood pressure. Raising your blood pressure may result in an increased blood flow which will dilate blood vessels, causing internal wounds.

Neck Lift Surgery Risks

Any surgical procedure carries certain risks and the possibility of complications, infection, and adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Neck lifts can be lengthy procedures, which increase the risks of complications from anesthesia. Make sure your surgeon addresses all of your questions and concerns to your satisfaction.

During your consultation, you will want to ask your surgeon about the following risks:

  • How likely is numbness of the neck?
  • What are the risks of infection?
  • What do I do in case I see discharge from the incision site?

It is important to remember that no surgeon can guarantee your satisfaction with neck lift surgery nor can they deny any risk factors. No matter how rarely risks occur, every surgery carries a certain amount of risk, and you have to decide for yourself if your potential desired result is worth the risk.

Long Term Results of Neck Lift Surgery

If properly and correctly performed by a surgeon, a neck lift delivers results that last for many years.
