Lip Augmentation Overview

Lip augmentation is achieved temporarily by injecting collagen, fat or synthetic filler into the lips or with a surgical procedure. Plump, luscious lips are a standard of beauty and femininity for women of all ages. Whether you were born with thin lips or if your lips have lost volume over time, lip augmentation can increase the size and shape of your lips.

Voluptuous lips are a very desirable facial feature. Until the 1980’s surgery was the only choice for augmentation. Over the years many injectable fillers have been perfected for the lips, and many techniques have been created. For a simple, temporary plumping, collagen is great option. Many women thought they were in heaven when surgeons figured out how to take excess fat from other areas of their bodies to inject into their lips. As new synthetic materials are discovered, lip augmentation injections have become more refined and can last up to two years.

When you use 1800mySurgeon, you are assured of making an informed decision because all of our Board-Certified Surgeons are prescreened and continually monitored. Having Realistic Expectations for Lip Augmentation

Having realistic expectations about how your image will change and how those changes will affect your life is important. Lip augmentation will change the appearance of your lips. Having plump lips may boost your self-confidence, but that won’t change who you are or the way other people feel about you.

Questions to Ask Your Prospective Surgeon

Once you’ve made an appointment for a consultation, take the time to prepare a list of questions and concerns you want to address with your prospective surgeon. The consultation is your opportunity to assess the surgeon as much as it is their opportunity to determine your candidacy for the procedure. Take your time, be thorough and know that you are never required to commit to a procedure or a surgeon because you’ve had a consultation, even if the consultation is free.

There are many different types of injectable fillers for lip augmentation, treatment styles, and surgical techniques. You want to make sure that you choose a surgeon whose work you admire and who has experience with lip augmentation. You will be able to see the outcome of some of their treatments by looking at before-and-after pictures.

This list of information may help you compile your questions and may encourage you to do some further research on the many different aspects of lip augmentation:

Injectable Fillers

  • You may want to bring in pictures of the size and shape lips you desire.
  • How many treatments will you need and at what intervals? Ask if there is a price break on a package deal.
  • Is there any need for allergy tests?
  • How long will it take to see your desired results?
  • Let your surgeon know of any medications, herbal treatments or vitamins you take, and make sure to get a list of products to avoid during treatment.

Lip Augmentation Surgery

  • What materials will be used to augment your lips?
  • How long will the augmentation last?
  • Would an injectable filler offer the same results?

If you’re consulting with a surgeon from 1800mySurgeon, you can rest assured that you will be meeting with a qualified Board-Certified Surgeon. If you already have a surgeon in mind, we can also perform a background check before you schedule your consultation. Most importantly, always trust your instincts during the consultation. The success of your treatment will be based on how you feel about your surgeon, your recovery and your result.

Lip Augmentation Recovery

Recovery will be based on the specific type or brand of injectable filler, the size and depth of the injections or the type of surgery you experienced.

With some injectables, you will experience slight swelling and in rare cases bruising. Icing the treatment area will reduce both side effects. Most patients are able to return to work or social activity within 24 to 48 hours.

Your lips may feel stiff and soar after surgery. You may experience some drooling during the first week after surgery. You should be able to return to work in a week to 10 days after surgery.

Lip Augmentation Risks

Any surgical procedure carries certain risks and the possibility of complications.

During your consultation, you will want to ask your surgeon about the following risks:

  • Is there a risk of infection at the injection site or at the incision site?
  • What is the risk of allergic reactions to the filler you’re using for treatment?
  • How often does “over filling” occur? (Over filling causes the treatment area to look swollen even after recovery.)

It is important to remember that no surgeon can guarantee your satisfaction with lip augmentation nor can they deny any risk factors. No matter how rarely risks occur, every medical treatment carries a certain amount of risk, and you have to decide for yourself if your potential desired result is worth the risk.

Long Term Results of Lip Augmentation

Neither injectable fillers nor surgical lip augmentation are permanent. Collagen and fat fillers tend to last from three to six months. Synthetic fillers can last up to 3 years. Continued use of injectable fillers can enhance the amount of time the treatment lasts between fillings. Surgery results vary greatly.
