All About Facial Rejuvenation

The skin on our face is the most visible part of our body. As we age, so does our skin – by thinning out and losing elasticity. The natural collagen and elastin tissues that once kept our skin firm lose their strength overtime, creating fine lines, sagging skin and all the signs of aging we dread.

Facial rejuvenation gives patients a more youthful look by reducing the signs of aging and reversing the damage caused by years of sun exposure, pollution, and possible smoking and alcohol. Facial rejuvenation reduces wrinkles, sun spots, tightens loose skin, recovers skin tone and color and gets rid of damaged blood vessels.

Millions of men and women undergo facial skin rejuvenation each year. This is because there are many more facial procedures available to patients than in the past. Also, today’s procedures are much safer than they used to be and much less invasive, giving patients quicker recovery periods.

The three areas of the face that men and women prefer to treat are the upper face, including the brows and the upper eyelids, the mid face including the lower eyelids, cheeks and the nose, and the lower face including the jaw line, mouth and neck.

The common facial rejuvenation procedures performed by cosmetic surgeons are SMAS facelifts, brow lifts, forehead lifts, facial fat grafting, laser resurfacing and non-surgical facelifts, such as the ThreadLift™.

SMAS facelifts (where SMAS stands for Sub-Muscular Aponeurotic System) give patients a firm, youthful look. The SMAS are the muscles and collagens that are found under the skin, which are tightened through this procedure. Facelifts are great for tightening the skin on the cheeks, jaw line and neck and take 2-3 hours to perform. Recovery is rather quick and patients report that facelift results can last 8 to 15 years.

Brow lifts correct droopiness in the eyebrows, which also has an affect on the upper eyelids. Brow lifts work well in fixing the crow’s feet around the eyes, as well as the wrinkles caused by frowning. This procedure takes 1-2 hours to perform and can be done by an incision behind the hairline, several small incisions in the scalp, incisions along the brows themselves or through laser. The recovery may take several weeks.

Forehead lifts fix the problem of drooping brows and the appearance of creases and lines that give people the angry and tired look. It also helps people get rid of frown lines that developed over the years from stress or muscle activity. A forehead lift is performed by making incisions and pulling and tightening muscles, which means patients may experience discomfort post-operation. The recovery may take close to 3 weeks.

Facial Fat Grafting, also known as Facial Fat Rejuvenation, is a method of extracting one’s own fat cells in order to replace fat where it is needed the most – in this case, the face. The areas of the face that are treated the most through Facial Fat Grafting are the jaw line, under eyes, lips, chin, forehead, the lower cheek, or anywhere else a patient needs a fuller look. Fat will be removed from various areas of the body, such as the buttocks, abdomen or saddlebags, and placed in the desired areas to achieve younger looking results. Recovery typically takes 2 weeks.

Laser resurfacing is another popular procedure used for facial rejuvenation. Laser resurfacing uses a beam of light (laser) that remove moles, wrinkles, spider veins and scarring. The laser beam heats the skin and stimulates the production of collagen fibers. This procedure can take minutes to an hour or two, depending on the size of the treatment area. Recovery may take several weeks, until the skin recovers and a new layer of skin is formed.

The ThreadLift™ procedure is a new type of non-surgical facelift that makes it possible for individuals with droopy cheeks, brows and areas of the neck to achieve a naturally younger look. The ThreadLift™ works with Contour Threads™ which are inserted beneath the skin, which pulls and tightens muscles towards the hairline. No surgery is involved and the threads can be altered for more lift whenever needed for up to 5 years. The procedure requires almost no recovery time. Most patients reduce the swelling and bruising by using ice compresses for 24-48 hours after the procedure.

Any method of skin rejuvenation should be handled with utmost care. It is important to find a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery who has gone through rigorous training in plastic surgery. Choose a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and one who is a member surgeon of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and/or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). That way, you can feel comfortable knowing that your doctor has the necessary skills and safety standards that will ensure successful results.
