When you think about your upcoming facelift or breast augmentation surgery, you probably focus on the day of the procedure or the moment when you'll finally be able to show off your new look to the world. There is a time period in between these two points in the plastic surgery process, however, and you must give it equal attention if you want your procedure to be a success. We're talking about recovery time, when your body will heal from the cosmetic procedure. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you through your recovery from plastic surgery.
Immediately after surgery
Depending on the procedure you underwent, you may be required to stay in the hospital for a period of time following the surgery. During this time, you will be monitored by your cosmetic surgeon and other medical staff to make sure everything is going as planned.
At some point before you're discharged, your doctor will give you some instructions on how to continue your recovery process. These instructions may include changing bandages, taking prescription medication or avoiding certain activities for a period of days, weeks or months. It's a good idea to have a friend or family member by your side during this conversation, so you aren't the only one charged with remembering how to carry out the rest of your recovery.
Most of your recovery time should be spent in a comfortable and secure environment. Some people choose to recover in hotels or specially designed spas, but most plastic surgery patients will spend this time at home. Preparation is the name of the game – you want to make sure you have a comfortable and clean bed, plenty of books and DVDs for entertainment and it doesn't hurt to cook and freeze a few meals in advance, since you may not be up for manning a stove while you recover.
Be certain that you check in with your plastic surgeon frequently during this time period, particularly if you notice any symptoms that do not seem normal. Keeping in touch with your doctor is the best way to make sure that your recovery is speedy and successful.
